World Cup 2010 Know Your Rivals Group H: Honduras’ Injury Concerns

Honduras are fairly healthy ahead of their participation in the World Cup but the injury to star striker David Suazo is a cause for concern. The Genoa striker suffered a muscle injury in his right leg in the match against Livorno on and will keep him sidelined for around four weeks.

The player will probably the rest of the Serie A season but Suazo's personal physician, Oscar Benitez, said that the striker should be in good condition for the World Cup.

His knock has caused some concern in the Honduras camp though as he has been tipped as one of the national team’s key pieces for the World Cup, but his injury has put him in doubt and coach Reinaldo Rueda recently stated that, “If the squad was announced today, he would be out.”

Thomas learning his trade

Make a list of the Honduran players currently plying their trade in Europe and the first names that spring to mind will be Wilson Palacios, David Suazo, Maynor Figueroa and Julio de Leon. Yet, there is one other Catracho export who is making a name for himself in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and is seemingly poised to join that select band.

The man in question is Hendry Thomas, a reliable defensive midfielder who has impressed the English Premier League’s demanding fans since joining Wigan Athletic in June last year. And with the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ looming ever closer, the 25-year-old international will soon have the chance to introduce himself to an even larger audience.

Given Thomas’ footballing lineage, it is no surprise to see him forging a successful career in the game. A cousin of the free-scoring Suazo, he can also count two other professional footballers among his relatives: Maynor Suazo and Allan Lalin.

Precociously talented as a youngster, Thomas made his debut in the Honduran top flight for Club Deportivo Olimpia at the age of only 16. After turning 23 he was given a trial by French first division outfit Toulouse, only for his lack of experience to prevent him being offered a contract.

Thomas would learn from the setback, however, as he recently explained. “I felt awful when that happened to me. I didn’t want to go back to Honduras and I wanted to give up football. My family rallied round though, and they convinced me to keep going.”

"Every week we come up against great players but as soon as the whistle blows you have to be professional and get on with the job of competing against them." (Hendry Thomas on playing in England.)

Honduras will open June 16 against Chile in FIFA World cup 2010. Honduras World Cup Tickets are now available online. US cap camp with Honduras test

United States have concluded a 19-day training camp for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa on Saturday with a friendly against fellow regional qualifier Honduras.

A largely US-based talent pool for the Americans includes forward Conor Casey, who scored two goals in a 3-2 victory last October at Honduras that clinched a finals berth for the US squad.

Defender Jonathan Bornstein, who also started against Honduras, and midfielder Benny Feilhaber, who replaced Casey in the American lineup, are also on hand for the latest matchup against the Central American squad. "The match is a great way to start the year as we commence preparations for the World Cup," USA coach Bob Bradley said.

Ten players from a similar camp in 2006 made the final US FIFA World Cup roster while 13 from the January camp were on the US side that made the final eight in 2002.

The Americans, preparing for a sixth consecutive FIFA World Cup appearance, will face England on 12 June in their opener in South Africa and also face Slovenia and Algeria in first-round matches.

Honduras, which qualified for the first time since 1982, will open June 16 against Chile and also face Spain and Switzerland. Honduras World Cup Tickets are now available online. Other than World cup tickets you can also get World cup football tickets, Champions League final tickets, FA Cup final tickets, FA Cup tickets and World cup 2010 tickets from the same spot online without any headache and with guaranteed delivery of tickets at home.

High times for Honduras

Honduras are in the midst of a major footballing renaissance. Los Catrachos, who last qualified for a FIFA World Cup™ finals back in 1982 in Spain, where they impressed many with a dogged draw against the hosts, roared again to book their place at this year’s showpiece event in South Africa alongside CONCACAF powers USA and Mexico. Along with this momentous achievement, the Hondurans have also been clambering their way up the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, with a three-place bump in the first table of the new year.

Moving up three places (21 points) in the latest instalment of the global standings, the Hondurans are now firmly entrenched as the third power in the North, Central American and Caribbean power structure, sliding in just behind USA and Mexico. Their overall position of 34th is a full 11 spots higher than Costa Rica, the side that pipped them to the last two world finals. Honduras’ current position is also higher than such established nations as Japan, Republic of Ireland, Ecuador, Romania, Sweden and Scotland.

Los Catrachos, who have often been considered a sleeping giant in their region due to a combination of raw, physical power and fine technique, have been continuing to progress of late. A friendly win over the USA on 23 January on the outskirts of Los Angeles was the primary reason for their latest boost up the world pecking order. The 3-1 win against Bob Bradley’s Americans, who lined up with only domestic-based players, was nothing if not impressive, and it sent a resounding warning to those who would underestimate the Central Americans come party time in South Africa this June.
