Honduras Squad Selection Controversies

Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda has named his 23-man FIFA World Cup™ squad and seven reserves in case of injuries. Honduras are fairly healthy ahead of their participation in the World Cup but the injury to star striker David Suazo is a cause for concern. The Genoa striker suffered a muscle injury in his right leg in the match against Livorno on and will keep him sidelined for around four weeks.

The player will probably the rest of the Serie A season but Suazo's personal physician, Oscar Benitez, said that the striker should be in good condition for the World Cup.

His knock has caused some concern in the Honduras camp though as he has been tipped as one of the national team’s key pieces for the World Cup, but his injury has put him in doubt and coach Reinaldo Rueda recently stated that, “If the squad was announced today, he would be out.”

Thomas learning his trade

Make a list of the Honduran players currently plying their trade in Europe and the first names that spring to mind will be Wilson Palacios, David Suazo, Maynor Figueroa and Julio de Leon. Yet, there is one other Catracho export who is making a name for himself in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and is seemingly poised to join that select band.

The man in question is Hendry Thomas, a reliable defensive midfielder who has impressed the English Premier League’s demanding fans since joining Wigan Athletic in June last year. And with the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ looming ever closer, the 25-year-old international will soon have the chance to introduce himself to an even larger audience.

Given Thomas’ footballing lineage, it is no surprise to see him forging a successful career in the game. A cousin of the free-scoring Suazo, he can also count two other professional footballers among his relatives: Maynor Suazo and Allan Lalin.

Precociously talented as a youngster, Thomas made his debut in the Honduran top flight for Club Deportivo Olimpia at the age of only 16. After turning 23 he was given a trial by French first division outfit Toulouse, only for his lack of experience to prevent him being offered a contract.

Thomas would learn from the setback, however, as he recently explained. “I felt awful when that happened to me. I didn’t want to go back to Honduras and I wanted to give up football. My family rallied round though, and they convinced me to keep going.”

"Every week we come up against great players but as soon as the whistle blows you have to be professional and get on with the job of competing against them." (Hendry Thomas on playing in England.)

Honduras will open June 16 against Chile in FIFA World cup 2010. Honduras World Cup Tickets are now available online. Other than World cup tickets you can also get World cup football tickets, Champions League final tickets, FA Cup final tickets, FA Cup tickets and World cup 2010 tickets from the same spot online without any headache and with guaranteed delivery of tickets at home.

US cap camp with Honduras test

United States have concluded a 19-day training camp for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa on Saturday with a friendly against fellow regional qualifier Honduras.

A largely US-based talent pool for the Americans includes forward Conor Casey, who scored two goals in a 3-2 victory last October at Honduras that clinched a finals berth for the US squad.

Defender Jonathan Bornstein, who also started against Honduras, and midfielder Benny Feilhaber, who replaced Casey in the American lineup, are also on hand for the latest matchup against the Central American squad. "The match is a great way to start the year as we commence preparations for the World Cup," USA coach Bob Bradley said.

Ten players from a similar camp in 2006 made the final US FIFA World Cup roster while 13 from the January camp were on the US side that made the final eight in 2002.

The Americans, preparing for a sixth consecutive FIFA World Cup appearance, will face England on 12 June in their opener in South Africa and also face Slovenia and Algeria in first-round matches.

Honduras, which qualified for the first time since 1982, will open June 16 against Chile and also face Spain and Switzerland.

High times for Honduras

Honduras are in the midst of a major footballing renaissance. Los Catrachos, who last qualified for a FIFA World Cup™ finals back in 1982 in Spain, where they impressed many with a dogged draw against the hosts, roared again to book their place at this year’s showpiece event in South Africa alongside CONCACAF powers USA and Mexico. Along with this momentous achievement, the Hondurans have also been clambering their way up the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, with a three-place bump in the first table of the new year.

Moving up three places (21 points) in the latest instalment of the global standings, the Hondurans are now firmly entrenched as the third power in the North, Central American and Caribbean power structure, sliding in just behind USA and Mexico. Their overall position of 34th is a full 11 spots higher than Costa Rica, the side that pipped them to the last two world finals. Honduras’ current position is also higher than such established nations as Japan, Republic of Ireland, Ecuador, Romania, Sweden and Scotland.

Los Catrachos, who have often been considered a sleeping giant in their region due to a combination of raw, physical power and fine technique, have been continuing to progress of late. A friendly win over the USA on 23 January on the outskirts of Los Angeles was the primary reason for their latest boost up the world pecking order. The 3-1 win against Bob Bradley’s Americans, who lined up with only domestic-based players, was nothing if not impressive, and it sent a resounding warning to those who would underestimate the Central Americans come party time in South Africa this June.

Spurs hunt Honduran ace

Wigan have rejected a £3 million bid from Tottenham for Honduran midfielder Wilson Palacios but left the door open to a deal at a higher price.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan said the bid had been rejected because the offer did not meet the club's valuation of the 24-year-old. "It is entirely up to them (Tottenham)," Whelan said. "They can either come back or forget it. Ten million, for that lad, is not enough. We are definitely looking for more than that, that's for sure."

Palacios, who followed Wigan boss Steve Bruce from Birmingham to Lancashire in January of last year, signed an extended contract in August although the details were not revealed by the club at the time. He has since enhanced his reputation with Wigan establishing themselves firmly in the top half of the table and put in another impressive performance in Wednesday night's 1-0 defeat at champions Manchester United.

Afterwards, Bruce appeared resigned to losing the player given the scale of the offer from Spurs. "For a club of our size, we are talking telephone numbers and I don't even know what Spurs are prepared to go to," Bruce said.

"I haven't spoken to the boy yet, but I have been there myself and how can you deny somebody a life-changing opportunity? We will see what the money men come up with in the next 24-48 hours.

"Whatever happens, though, it will take top dollar to get him. He showed against United what he can do, but in two years time, he can be the best around." Trophy arrives in Panama and Honduras

For approximately one week, two central American nations have had the privilege of hosting the most recognised trophy in world sport.

In Panama and in Honduras, Presidents Ricardo Martinelli and Porfírio Lobo Sosa, respectively, were the only citizens of each country allowed to hold the trophy that has already been hoisted aloft by football’s most talented stars such as Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, Diego Maradona, and most recently, Fabio Cannavaro.

Panama has never been to the finals, but the President of the Panamanian Football Federation, Ariel Alvarado, said that he is hopeful the country will qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ in Brazil.

Meanwhile, in San Pedro Sula, the trophy was received with the same joy Hondurans have shared since the country was guaranteed one of the spots at South Africa 2010. In another event in Tegucigalpa, Ramon Maradiaga, Hector Zelaya and Fernando Bulnez, stars of the 1982 squad were received as champions.

In the farewell from Honduras, 10,000 people arrived from all parts of the country to see the trophy up close. Those were moments of pure emotion for entire families, which had never imagined they’d have this opportunity.

The FIFA World Cup Trophy tour presented by Coca-Cola now heads to Mexico. It’ll be the 64th stop for the Trophy as it makes its way to the host nation of South Africa on 4 May 2010.

Honduras coach omits trio

Honduras head coach Reinaldo Rueda has left Noel Valladares, Ramon Nunez and Osman Chavez out of his squad for the friendly international against Turkey.

Colombia-born Rueda decided to rest Olimpia goalkeeper Valladares, a squad regular during the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualification campaign, and midfielder Nunez. Chavez was not named because "he has not played for four months", according to Rueda.

Honduras will travel to Istanbul with a strong squad containing nine foreign-based players, but one surprise name is Mauricio Sabillon, who has recently been transferred to Hangzhou Luchen, a team recently relegated from the Chinese Super League.

Wigan Athletic's Maynor Figueroa and Hendry Thomas, Tottenham Hotspur's Wilson Palacios and Genoa striker David Suazo are also part of the squad for the match on 3 March.

Honduras have been drawn in Group H for South Africa 2010, alongside Spain, Chile and Switzerland.

Honduras beat USA in tuneup

Honduras defeated the USA 3-1 last night in a friendly football match between two teams bound for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ in June.

Honduras had goals from Jerry Palacios, Roger Espinoza and Carlos Pavon, who converted a penalty in the 19th minute. Clarence Goodson scored the lone goal for the USA in the 70th minute.

The crowd of 18,626 at the Home Depot Center in California was largely pro-Honduras, and they were delighted by Palacios's header off a cross from Pavon, as well as Espinoza's crisp strike.

The hosts were a man down for much of the match, after defender Jimmy Conrad was ejected by Mexican referee Benito Archundia in the 17th minute for his second yellow card.

"It's tough to fight back, especially a man down," said Jonathan Bornstein, the closest to a regular in the US lineup. "The match just didn't go our way this time."

For the USA, the match was the conclusion of a 19-day training camp that featured a largely US-based talent pool trying to play their way on to the South Africa 2010 squad. Ten players from a similar camp in 2006 made the final FIFA World Cup squad for the US.

The Americans, preparing for a sixth consecutive FIFA World Cup appearance, will face England on 12 June in their opener in South Africa and also face Slovenia and Algeria in first-round matches. Honduras, which qualified for the first time since 1982, will open 16 June against Chile and shall also face Spain and Switzerland.

Liga Nacional de Ascenso de Honduras

From 1965 to 1979 the system of promotion to the Liga Nacional was regida by the Federación Deportiva Extraescolar de Honduras.

It was played in amateur form and the champion of the zones central, southern, oriental would play against the champion of the North Western zone.

The Winner was promoted to the Liga Nacional. In the first tournament of the Liga Nacional there wasn't any promoted or relgated since it was a draft tournament.

It was until 1980 when the second division was founded which now a days it's called Liga de Ascenso.

In that season, the league didn't have any relegated team since the players of the Honduras national football team needed to be in training at full time. From the year on, the rules have been applied and there have been many promoted and relegated teams.

The last team that was relegated was Atlético Olanchano. In 2006 Hispano was relegated but they bought Valencia's category in the league; this situation has occurred with other teams.
